Data Representation in Hyper-Realistic, Immersive Multimedia Environments

Data Representation in Hyper-Realistic, Immersive Multimedia Environments

An in-depth investigative study into immersive multimedia and hyper-realty, including research into the use of technologies including binaural stereo sound, stereoscopic imaging and head-tracking, for the purpose of realtime 3D data representation.

The project resulted in the construction of a prototype multmedia environment. Major elements to the prototype development included experiments with binaural sound capture and reproduction, custom built electronics for head-tracking devices, and complex programming in the Pure Data environment. The result was an environment designed to alow users to experience sound visuals which appear to be all around them and coming from different directions, which immerses the user in a 3D environment in which data could be represented.

The project was very well recieved within the university academic community, and amongst industry professionals attending exhibits of the project at the Brunel University and at the Made In Brunel | 08 design show in Islington.

The project was nominated for the HSBC Innovation Award at Made in Brunel, and was the winner of the Microsoft Award for the Best Final Year Project in BSc Multimedia Technology and Design at Brunel University. The work was also mentioned in an article, “Young At Heart“, published in the science magazine Eureka, in September 2008.

Interactive experiments with video feedback

Live social experiments based on the accidental discovery of video feedback. This feedback happens when a video camera is recording an image of what it is seeing and a loop is created - rather like a digital moving image version of two mirrors facing eachother. Colourful and intricate patterns can be created if the setup is correct, and users can interact with the image to create different patterns. A video feedback loop was set up at a party, and it was interesting to observe the guests’ interaction with the moving images projected on the screen.

A film based on an experimental drive through West London

This experimental artwork film was designed to find some ordered patterns in a seemingly chaotic British urban environment. A vehicle navigates an urban network of roads using a set of rules, rather than intedning to reach a specific destination. These rules dictate that a traveller must alternate between left and right hand turns at each signposted junction, otherwise they keep going straight on.
